Thanks for the feedback Mack! I agree that Lugo could mess up the platoon by taking away at bats against LH pitching at 2B. However, his ongoing injury seems to be mysteriously lasting a long time. I don't see foul play, just that the situation might have worked itself out if Lugo is hobbled to start the season. Injuries will always open up some at bats and I don't think this situation will be immune.

Who knows what TLR will do, but at bats for Lugo will be tough to swallow for me unless Freese struggles out of the gate. Thanks for checking out the story and commenting!

I think that is well though tout – further, I would believe it an ideal way for the Card’s to proceed – I do question whether it trends TLR accurately – not that it would significantly reduce Lopez AB’s – rather, Lugo’s veteran status and heartbeat will likely contribute to Freese receiving fewer AB’s – not that Lugo will see time at third – but I do expect Lugo to be the primary backup and platoon partner to Skip – as I would also expect that Lopez will spend the majority of his time at 3B and occasional Outfield duty – don’t misunderstand, I don’t believe this to be the most prudent approach- just the more likely one. I do appreciate the time you put in AB breakdown – and would love to be wrong about Lugo…. Perhaps

I don't know where Lugo fits other than getting into the mix at 2B and spelling Brendan Ryan at SS. Lopez profiles as a much stronger candidate for at bats than Lugo for me, so I'm willing to limit Lugo's use to get Lopez more chances.

We'll see how Lugo's current injury progresses, but I've been wondering about his role on the team since the day we signed Lopez. There are only so many at bats to distribute and Lopez is simply better and more versatile than Lugo.

That's where the rub might be. However, we've dealt ok with adequate D at third for the time being, and if we do indeed DL or trade Khalil and we throw Tyler Greene or Ryan in at SS, you've got to figure they would offset some potentially below average D at third. Another intriguing target would be Beltre, but I imagine we'd only want him if Glaus is going to be out the whole year. It wouldn't make much sense to have both Glaus and Beltre on the team.

DeRosa, on the other hand, can fill in at third base (and perhaps, most importantly, give us some offensive pop from the position) until Glaus gets back (assuming he does). After that, he can play multiple other positions and thus make the trade worthwhile for the whole season.

Good questions, I'm looking forward to your follow up. I think DeRosa is a darn good ballplayer. Like you said he's a La Russa dream, he plays hard and can pretty much man any position on the field.

As a utility player, he would be a huge asset but as an everyday third basemen... I'm not so sure.

I'm with you, it's always good to have a scheduled opening. Of course, with injuries, etc., there may be openings we don't know about.

I would think, if Lohse has another good year, he could be tradable if we needed to open up a spot for Garcia or Todd.
